Tapash Roy,Kolkata, 18 October 2025: Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer among women in India, accounting for nearly 30% of all female cancer cases. In 2025 alone, approximately 2.3 lakh women nationwide are expected to be newly diagnosed, including over 15,000 in West Bengal. Alarmingly, more than half of these cases are detected at an advanced stage, and Indian women are often diagnosed nearly a decade earlier than their Western counterparts, typically during their most active years of work and family life.

Amidst these concerning trends, Desun Hospital has introduced a dedicated Breast Cancer Clinic with a strong focus on Breast Conservation Surgery (BCS). This modern surgical approach treats cancer effectively while preserving the natural appearance of the breast, helping women maintain their confidence and sense of dignity. The clinic will operate every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Dr. Sreya Mallik, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Desun Hospital, stated that with the availability of targeted therapies, precision chemotherapy, and post-operative radiotherapy, breast conservation is now a safe and effective option for many patients. She added that the hospital’s multi-disciplinary tumour board carefully evaluates each case to create a personalised treatment plan based on the individual’s condition and stage of cancer.

Dr. Jyoti Gupta, Consultant Onco-Surgeon and Breast Surgery Specialist, emphasized the use of advanced imaging and surgical planning to ensure both the safety and aesthetic outcomes of the procedure. She highlighted that the aim is not only to cure the disease but also to offer women choices that support their self-esteem and quality of life.

Dr. Aman Prakash, Consultant Onco-Surgeon, pointed out that in early-stage breast cancer, survival rates for patients undergoing breast conservation surgery combined with radiotherapy are equivalent to those undergoing mastectomy. He noted that beyond curing the disease, the focus is on helping women return to a sense of normalcy.

Addressing the emotional impact of breast cancer, Ms. Anushila Dutta, Consultant Psychologist at Desun Hospital, underlined the importance of psychological support. She explained that counselling plays a vital role in helping patients cope with fear, rebuild their self-image, and embrace life after cancer treatment.

Reinforcing the hospital’s commitment, Mr. Sajal Dutta, Chairman and Managing Director of Desun Hospital, stated that healing is not just about medicine, but also about compassion. He said the new clinic embodies Desun’s belief that every woman deserves not just survival, but also dignity and hope.
