Tapash Roy, ATNN: St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) is set to hold its seventh convocation on 21 February 2026 at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town under the dynamic leadership of Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj. Rev. Dr. Arturo Sosa, S.J., the Superior General of the Jesuits based in Rome, Italy, has kindly agreed to attend the ceremony as the chief guest. The Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal and Visitor of the University, Dr. C. V. Ananda Bose, is also expected to preside over the event along with the Vice-Chancellor.
Since its establishment in 2017, the university has undergone extensive transformation in both physical infrastructure and academics. The second academic building is nearing completion with modern classrooms, laboratories, a library, and a moot court. The university has already invested around Rs 550 crore in infrastructural expansion. A major auditorium with a seating capacity of nearly 2,000, along with two smaller auditoriums accommodating 600 and 300 people, is under construction.
Plans are underway to build an MDP block with 75 rooms and VIP suites. To promote sports among students, the university is considering the construction of two swimming pools where regular training will be provided.
From 2026, SXUK will introduce B.Tech programmes, followed by M.Tech courses. The university is also working to launch integrated MBA and integrated B.Ed. programmes, along with a School of Design, a School of Nursing, and a medical college. The Executive MBA programme is already attracting many corporate professionals. The university also plans to introduce blended-mode Executive MBA and a new MBA in Hospital Management to cater to the growing demand for skilled hospital administrators.
Under the new assessment system, the NAAC accreditation process for SXUK is scheduled in 2026. The university is preparing documentation according to the 10 criteria of the binary NAAC model, as discussed in recent NAAC seminars. As part of this preparation, the university completed its sixth Academic and Administrative Audit in November 2025, and recommendations from external experts are being considered to meet upcoming evaluation challenges.
To keep pace with the era of artificial intelligence, the university has introduced an AI-enabled Learning Management System (LMS), becoming the first university in Eastern India to do so. SXUK has partnered with UK-based organisation Shiksak for this system, aligning with its ambitious Vision 2030, which aims to reach an enrolment of 10,000 students. The LMS offers assignment management, online examinations, content management, and other features that enable teachers to focus more effectively on student success. Plans are also underway to introduce certificate and diploma programmes for working professionals and skill enhancement.
The university has also started searching for land to set up its proposed School of Nursing and Medical College. Discussions with the state government are awaited. Officials stated that the university intends to begin with a nursing college for both male and female students, followed by the establishment of a full-fledged medical college.
