World’s First-of-Its-Kind Kidney Transplant Performed on Patient with Ultra-Rare Factor VII Deficiency

ATNN,KOLKATA:Doctors at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, Kolkata, have achieved a global medical milestone by successfully performing the world’s first kidney transplant on a patient with severe Factor VII deficiency, an extremely rare genetic bleeding disorder seen in only one in five million people. With no compatible donors except his father—who was also a carrier of the same genetic defect—the medical team faced an unprecedented challenge requiring extraordinary precision and ethical consideration. Led by Dr. Deepak Shankar Ray, Chief Nephrologist, the multidisciplinary team executed the high-risk surgery with meticulous coordination, constantly monitoring clotting parameters to prevent life-threatening bleeding or dangerous clots. Haematology expert Dr. Sisir Kumar Patra highlighted the narrow safety margin involved in managing the rare disorder throughout the procedure. Despite a brief post-operative complication where the patient developed temporary paralysis due to a minor clot, timely intervention helped him recover fully, and he is now stable with healthy creatinine levels. Hospital leaders, including Mr. Abhijit C.P. and Mr. R. Venkatesh, praised the team for pushing medical boundaries while upholding the highest ethical standards, noting that this groundbreaking achievement places Eastern India prominently on the global map of advanced clinical excellence. The landmark case has already attracted significant attention from medical experts worldwide for its clinical rarity and ethical significance.
