On World Environment Day, Kolkata witnessed such a confluence as the spirit of the Ganga embraced that of the Kaveri in a celebration of poetry, environmental consciousness, and human compassion. In a ceremony rich with symbolism and meaning, renowned Kannada poet, thinker, environmental activist, and agriculturist Nagathihalli Ramesh was honoured with the Ganga–Kaveri Ocean and Earth Compassion International Award, transforming an award presentation into a tribute to humanity’s enduring bond with water, nature, and life itself.
The Ganga and the Kaveri rise from distant mountains, flow through different geographies, nourish countless lives, and finally surrender themselves to the same sea. Their journey is a reminder that while origins may differ, destinies often converge. In much the same way, a poet shaped by the landscapes of Karnataka found himself honoured in Bengal, where the spirit of two rivers seemed to embrace through poetry, compassion, and environmental consciousness.
For decades, Nagathihalli Ramesh has listened to the language of rain, rivers, lakes, forests, and fields, translating their silent wisdom into words. His poetry does not merely describe nature; it breathes with it. Water flows through his verses as memory, hope, warning, and prayer. Through literature and public engagement alike, he has continually reminded society that protecting the Earth is not only an environmental obligation but also a profoundly human responsibility.
A particularly moving moment of the evening came with the Bengali recitation of his poem Ganga–Kaveri. As the verses echoed through the hall, the rivers seemed to flow beyond geography, becoming symbols of unity, continuity, and shared destiny. The poem beautifully mirrored the award’s vision—”Two Sacred Rivers, One Ocean, One Planet, One Responsibility”—a message that resonated deeply with the gathering.
Attended by environmentalists, scholars, writers, journalists, policymakers, and international delegates, the event unfolded as something far greater than a formal ceremony. It became a confluence of rivers and cultures, of poetry and ecological awareness, of memory and aspiration. In honouring Nagathihalli Ramesh, the gathering celebrated not only a distinguished literary voice but also the enduring belief that compassion, like a river, has the power to connect distant shores and nourish the future of humanity.
