Ramp, Eco-Glamour & A Billion-Dollar Buzz: ILPA Rules Kolkata Runway!
Aaj Talkss, Kolkata: The city’s fashion quotient is about to hit an all-time high as the Indian Leather Products Association (ILPA) gears up for its iconic signature event, Leather on the Ramp 2026. Slated to take place at the Hotel Hyatt Regency on October 29, this year’s extravaganza isn’t just about style—it is a bold statement blending high fashion with a serious commitment to sustainability. As India’s premier leather trade body representing over 200 manufacturers and exporters, Kolkata-headquartered ILPA is pulling out all the stops to position local craftsmanship on the global map.
This year, the high-octane runway shares the spotlight with AILPA 2.0, a massive international B2B fair running from October 28 to 30 at the Biswa Bangla Exhibition Centre. The fair is set to welcome more than 60 international buyers from top global brands and major retail buying houses, all scouting for the best of Indian leather. On the runway, expect nothing short of pure luxury. Five premium exporters from Kolkata alongside one top Design Studio—the absolute epicenter of the country's leather goods industry—will showcase their exclusive, high-end collections.
Forget traditional leather stereotypes, because this edition is all about innovation. The runway will prominently feature eco-leather alongside cutting-edge, tech-integrated fashion trends. In a visionary move, designers are incorporating new-age materials like textiles and rattan, proving that luxury can be both forward-looking and environmentally responsible. Beyond the glamorous outfits, the event highlights ILPA’s social conscience, shedding light on eco-friendly leather projects, youth training, and community engagement initiatives.
The runway buzz comes at a time of explosive growth, with the Indian leather export market projected to cross a staggering USD 8 billion in 2026-27. Local manufacturers are poised to claim a massive share of the global pie while simultaneously launching fresh vocational and skill development programs to empower local youth and strengthen the workforce through global institutional tie-ups. Summing up the electric energy surrounding the event, ILPA President Mr. Md. Azhar shared a powerful vision, stating that their motto is "Think Leather-Think Bengal," and noted that the association is privileged to have a highly proactive government promoting manufacturing and exports to develop the ILPA leather goods park into a world-class production hub.
Adding to the momentum, Mr. Arjun M. Kulkarni, Chairman of the ILPA Fashion Show Committee, emphasized the deeper socio-economic impact of the event. He noted that Leather on the Ramp 2026 is designed to firmly reinforce ILPA's vision of generating thousands of new employment opportunities across the manufacturing, design, retail, and export sectors. This massive job boost is fueled by a robust, soaring demand for high-quality leather goods at both domestic and international levels, seamlessly bridging the gap between glamour and grassroots growth. Get ready, Kolkata—the future of fashion is sustainable, luxurious, and uniquely Bengal!
